Hi,

I have the same issue as someone posted in 2018 under the same title with the same 17" laptop. I have vertical multicolored lines on my display. An external monitor works fine. Occasionally the display will work, but now rarely. The previous post went off to a private message after noting it was a hardware issue, so not sure what the solution was. Is it the display panel itself (replaceable), or the video chip (soldered to MB)?

Thank you!

Joe

The video chip, which is almost certainly the issue, is soldered to the system board and is not replaceable.

You would need to have the entire laptop disassembled and the system board replaced and that all will be very expensive -- probably costing more than simply replacing the laptop.

But that said, we are not able, or permitted, to provide any repair estimates or equipment prices.

For this information, you would need to contact an HP Repair or Service Center.

Since you live in the U.S., here is a link to the HP Service Repair Centers:
https://www.service-center-locator.com/hp-hewlett-packard/hp-hewlett-packard-service-center.htm

If that link does not provide you sufficient information, then use the main HP link:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

I've found those links to be unreliable if you're using Win10 and the new Edge Browser; so if you are, you need to use something else, like FireFox.

Good Luck

Thank you WAWOOD!

The laptop works fine with an external display, but that is a different video driver path, correct? I was hoping it might be just the display. I removed and cleaned the ribbon connector on the motherboard, same issue. Also, tapping components/cables/display does not resolve, although occasionally the desktop image appears (randomly).

So since the system board is the likely culprit, and would be too costly to repair/replace, using the laptop with an external monitor will be the path I follow. Thank you for your time!

The best,

Joe
