Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased this computer over the holidays and the computer is ok, but the screen color is washed out. Brightness adjustment did not help nor did the calibrate display function. Any help would be welcomed as I had planned to use this computer to edit and process photos.

Thank you.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have a new HP Notebook - 17-bs049dx and read that the screen color is washed out. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

Do you mean to say that the screen colors are dull and not bright?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue :

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
  • Do not power on the laptop yet.

Now, let us check how the display appears in the BIOS. The following steps will help:

  • Power on the laptop and immediately hit the f10 key repeatedly (7-8 times). This will load up the BIOS screen.
  • If the color appears washed out in BIOS too then it indicates towards a hardware issue. In such a case you may contact our HP phone support team to check the available warranty options for your laptop.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted. Good luck! 🙂

Thank you for your prompt response. I did try rebooting and viewing the BIOS screen as you suggested and it seems to be fine so I don't think it's a hardware issue. The colors appeared washed out or as you stated dull as though it was this white haze over the screen. I adjusted the gamma and that appeared to help but there is still this issue of the blue tint. The color is just different from my old computer. I also releazied i'm having to adjust to a new screen that is "glossy" and changes based on the angle at which I'm viewing. My former touch screen had good color and viewing irregardless of the angle of the screen. I will continue to work with settings on the Intel graphics setting panel to see if I can reduce the blue but other than that I will just have to get used to it. I have incuded a picture with the color differences. You can even see it in the difference in black in the task bar. IMG_0152.JPG

You're welcome. You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.

You could try updating the drivers by downloading and running the HP Support Assistant. This tool is will detect any absent drivers and install them for you.

Hope this works out. Good luck! 🙂

I'm the farthest thing from a software engineer, but my HP laptop (Elite Book) has had this bad habit of waking up from sleeping with the much described "washed out" screen. Basically it was so bad that I couldn't even make out streets on Google maps for example; there just wasn't enough contrast.

Anyway, I found a simple solution that seems to work for a week or two, sure, not permanent, but easily gets rid of the annoyance. I hope this works for others as well.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > Device Manager > Monitors > Generic PnP Monitor > select "Driver" tab > Disable Device > YES > Enable Device .....

And then the  screen is fine again

Good Luck!
