There will be times when I want to use my laptop more like a desktop. I will use an external keyboard and monitor. I like the fact that I can select "do nothing" when the laptop is closed as it keeps it safer from spills. I am curious if the screen turns off or stays on. Hopefully it turns off as my guess is this would save on battery power.

Yes it absolutely does....it's kind of like wondering what happens inside the refrigerator when you close the door. You gotta just trust that the light goes off. Same way with a laptop. There is a screen position sensor or toggle switch and the screen goes dark but "do nothing" just means don't go to sleep, don't power off, etc. Allows the laptop to continue to be used as the CPU of a desktop-like setup with external monitor, mouse and keyboard. .

I am sounding like a broken record by thanking you again but I sincerely appreciate your help. I have owned some decent laptops in the past but all seemed to have problems - Thinkpad W530 (W something or other that would give me the dreaded blue screen when attached to an external monitor (can't remember exact number ), a Yogo Pro 2 that had the keypad paint wear off after a little more than a year, and now a Dell XPS15 that has been very buggy even after a little more than a year owning it. I would have problems and then they would go away, then new problems and then they would go away. I never changed any settings so I assume they were common problems that were either caused or cured by updates. Very frustrating and I will never buy Dell again. So far the Spectre has been a delight to use.

I discovered in order to get 4k I need to choose the option where ony the externa monitor is used, which does turn off the screen on the laptop before it closes. Everything is working perfectly. I am thinking no sound because monitor does not have speakers (duh), so the sound goes through the laptop.

Yep, buetooth good option. I have a Fugoo XL which works great with my Dell and expect it to do the same with the Spectre. I am very pleased with the Spectre as it is doing everything I want it to do.
And by using the external monitor as the only option I know that refrigerator light is turning off.
