Hi, I’m having a serious issue with my HP laptop after a recent Windows 11 update.

When I turn on the laptop, the built-in screen keeps flashing black — not at a fixed rhythm, but randomly. It even seems to react to the touchpad: when I move the trackpad, the flickering gets worse, and sometimes the screen stays completely black.

If I manage to restart the laptop while it’s flickering, the problem disappears after the reboot. However, if the laptop has been in sleep mode for a long time, the issue comes back when I turn it on again.

So, short sleep sessions don’t cause it, but after a long one (or a cold boot), the screen flickers again.

External displays work perfectly fine — only the laptop’s internal screen is affected.

Can anyone help me figure out what’s causing this and how to fix it permanently?

My laptop is a hp envy 13-aq1xxx series.
I wanted to update gpu driver but there is no driver available since i upgraded from w10 to w11 (i miss cliked it was not intentional).

@KorayIT, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with your HP Envy 13-aq1xxx series laptop after upgrading to Windows 11. The screen flickering, especially in conjunction with the touchpad and the sleep state, is often related to driver issues or conflicts, particularly graphics drivers. Given that you mentioned you missed the option to update your GPU driver, that could definitely be a factor.

Let's go through some troubleshooting steps:

Update/ Rollback the Graphics Driver

The first thing I’d recommend is checking your graphics driver.

Check for Driver Updates:

Right-click on the Start Menu and select Device Manager.

Expand the Display Adapters section.

Right-click on your GPU and choose Update Driver.

Select Search automatically for drivers and see if Windows finds an updated driver. If an update is available, install it.

Rollback the Driver (if it’s already updated):
If you suspect the issue happened after an update, you might want to roll back to the previous driver:

In Device Manager, right-click your graphics adapter and go to Properties.

Under the Driver tab, see if the Rollback Driver option is available. If it is, try rolling back to the previous version and see if the issue resolves.

If you're missing specific drivers after upgrading to Windows 11, go to HP’s support website and download the latest drivers for your model.

Perform HP System Diagnostics

HP provides built-in diagnostics tools that can help check for hardware issues, including display-related problems.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

Turn off the laptop.

Press and hold the ESC key while powering on the laptop to open the Startup Menu.

Press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.

Select System Tests and then choose Component Test.

Test the display and touchpad separately to see if there are any hardware issues.

Disable Touchpad Drivers Temporarily

Since you mentioned that the flickering worsens with the touchpad movement, the issue may be a conflict between the touchpad driver and the display driver.

Open Device Manager.

Find your touchpad under Mice and other pointing devices.

Right-click and choose Disable device (temporarily, to test if it fixes the issue).

See if the screen flickering stops when the touchpad is disabled.

If it does, try updating or reinstalling your touchpad drivers.

Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Sometimes, display-related issues can be tied to outdated BIOS or chipset drivers, especially after an OS upgrade.

Go to HP’s official support site, search for your laptop model (HP Envy 13-aq1xxx), and download the latest BIOS and Chipset drivers available for Windows 11.

Make sure to follow any instructions carefully when updating the BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

I discovered a new thing when i launch for the first time.

If i don't use my trackpad, i can use my computer without a problem.
I can do: windows, research for chrome, do a search on chrome, delete tab, add new one etc..

And when i touch my trackpad my screen begin to flicker and i must restart to be able to use my computer normally.

I didn't have the time to test all you give me in your answer to me, sorry i had no time even to answer.
But i can now do it, so tell me if you want me to do new things or i must do what you told me in the old answer.

Sorry again for the late reply and thank you !
