Well I found a driver and downloaded it and it still didn't work. Says it cannot connect to driver, but I am happy using my wireless mouse. I was able to get ahold of a copy of Windows 7, thinking that might help but it didn't. Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for performing the troubleshooting, Please try few steps recommended below.
Type msconfig in the search box.
On the startup tab, I open task manager.
right click the Synaptics touchpad.
Under compatibility tab check run this program as administrator then restart your laptop.
Check if the touchpad works.
Also, update touchpad driver from the link below.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50688.exe

Hi! @tburgess62, thanks for the response.
Go to control panel select mouse click touchpad tab click enable and click settings.
Select click tab and Put a check mark in tap and drag.
Also, Update the touchpad drivers if the issue still persists.
