Why doesn't my HP laptop detect external monitors through docking station?

Hi @tcr4ever39

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the issue. It’s understandably frustrating when your HP Laptop 15-dy2792wm doesn’t detect external monitors through a docking station—especially when everything else seems to be working fine.

Why This Happens

Your laptop model, the HP 15-dy2792wm, includes a USB-C port that supports data transfer only. It does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode or Power Delivery, which means:

  • You cannot use the USB-C port to connect external monitors via a docking station.
  • The port is not compatible with most HP USB-C docks like the G5 Dock for video output.[1]

What You Can Do Instead

Option 1: Use the HDMI Port

Your laptop includes a standard HDMI output. You can:

  • Connect one external monitor directly using an HDMI cable.

Option 2: Add a Second Monitor via USB-A

If you need a second external monitor:

  • Use a DisplayLink-certified USB-A to HDMI adapter.
  • These adapters include a built-in chip that allows video output over USB-A.

  • Even if your docking station has HDMI or DisplayPort outputs, they won’t work unless your laptop’s USB-C port supports video output (Alt Mode).
  • You can still use the dock for USB devices, Ethernet, and charging accessories, but not for video.

If you’d like help choosing a compatible DisplayLink adapter or setting up dual monitors, I’d be glad to assist. Just let me know what you'd prefer.
