Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right board. My HP Pavilion is booting up to this green pixelated screen. When I press down underneath it flicks to a black screen. What is causing this and how do I fix it please?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Saralouise1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the image; it’s very helpful. Based on what I see and your description:

What’s Happening

  • The screen shows a green pixelated pattern with a bright white spot near the center.
  • Pressing underneath the screen causes it to flick to black, which strongly suggests a hardware issue, not software.
  • This is typically caused by:
    • Loose or damaged display cable (often the LVDS/eDP cable connecting the screen to the motherboard).
    • Pressure-sensitive connection, pressing the chassis changes the signal, indicating a poor connection or damaged connector.
    • Faulty display panel or GPU solder joint issue (less common but possible).

How to Fix It

  1. External Monitor Test
    • Connect your Pavilion to an external monitor via HDMI.
    • If the external display works fine, the GPU is okay, and the issue is with the internal display or cable.

  2. Hard Reset
    • Power off, unplug the AC, and remove the battery (if removable).
    • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect and test.

  3. Reseat Display Cable
    • If you’re comfortable opening the laptop:
      • Remove the bottom cover.
      • Locate the display cable near the hinge and reseat it firmly.
      • Check for damage or corrosion.
    • If not comfortable, take it to a technician.

  4. Replace Cable or Panel
    • If reseating doesn’t help, the cable may need replacing.
    • If the cable is fine, the LCD panel itself may be failing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
