My Chromebook will not turn on.

Hello,

Understood. I’ll guide you step by step, starting with the most effective fixes for HP Chromebooks, and I’ll explain why each step matters so you don’t end up guessing.

Let’s first determine whether it’s a power issue, a ChromeOS lockup, or hardware failure.

Step 1 – Check if it’s truly dead or just not booting

Plug in the original charger and look closely:

  • Do you see any LED light (charging or power)?

  • Do you hear fan noise or feel warmth?

  • Does the screen stay completely black?

👉 Even a small LED tells us the motherboard is getting power.

Step 2 – Hard reset (most common fix on Chromebooks)

This clears the Embedded Controller (EC), which often locks up.

  1. Unplug the charger

  2. Press and hold Power + Refresh (⟳) together

  3. While holding them, plug the charger back in

  4. Hold for 10 seconds

  5. Release all keys

  6. Try turning it on normally

📌 This fixes a large percentage of “won’t turn on” Chromebook cases.

Step 3 – Force power drain

If that didn’t work:

  1. Unplug charger

  2. Press and hold Power button for 30 seconds

  3. Plug charger back in

  4. Try powering on

Why: this discharges residual power and resets the EC.

Step 4 – Check charger and charging port

  • Try a different charger if possible (USB-C or barrel, depending on model)

  • Try a different wall outlet

  • Inspect the charging port for looseness or debris

⚠️ Many Chromebooks won’t power on at all if the charger handshake fails.

Step 5 – Recovery mode test (checks if board is alive)

  1. Hold Esc + Refresh (⟳)

  2. Tap Power

  3. Release Power, keep Esc + Refresh held for 10 seconds

If you see a recovery screen → the Chromebook is alive and this is software-related.

Step 6 – External signs test

While trying to power on:

  • Press Caps Lock

  • Does the Caps Lock LED respond?

If yes → display issue
If no → system not booting

When this becomes a hardware issue

If after all steps:

  • No lights

  • No response

  • No recovery screen

Then likely causes are:

  • Failed battery

  • Faulty charging circuit

  • Motherboard power rail failure

For HP Chromebooks:
➡️ Only supported fix = depot repair or board replacement
