HP 350 G1 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a horizontal black line of dead pixels across my screen. I'm trying to find out if replacing the screen will solve this problem and, if so, can I do this myself and what is the necessary part? This is an 8 year old laptop, so it's hardly worth pouring any money into, but might be worth it if I can fix it myself.

I searched this topic on here and saw the recommended to boot in BIOS, so I did and the line is still there.

I also tried pressing on the line at restart, after reading suggestions about that, which only seemed to spread out the problem.

Hello @JSH1976

Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... I would like to help you.

(1) Double check with external monitor connected via vga/hdmi cable.

Do you have the same error pattern on external monitor ?

- Power off external monitor

- Connect vga/hdmi cable

- Power on external monitor

- Power on notebook

Hello @JSH1976

Recommendation and solution

In your case: Service is required !
- The computer should be disassembled and checked.
[Always recommended] Thermal paste for CPU GPU and bridges should be renewed
[Always recommended] The function of the fan(s) must be checked

The internal display cable that goes from motherboard to screen has to be checked or replaced

The screen has to be replaced

- Short circuit test

- General cleaning ...

HP warranty valid -> Contact HP Support for service repair

HP warranty expired:

If you can't do that, you should have it serviced by a professional notebook (chip level) repair store.

Cheap Alternative:

Live with the error.

Good luck

Thank you for the info on the possible steps to take.

The thing is, I do not want to put any significant money into repairing a computer that in perfect condition would now be worth less than $100, so I am definitely not getting it serviced. The warranty has long since expired! I'm not sure if the first three always recommended steps are something I could figure out how to check on my own.

It appears that a replacement screen might cost about the same as the whole computer, just for the part, and I would be willing to spend under $100 to give it a try. I guess what I really need to know is how to identify the part (exact replacement screen) I need to buy and how many prongs it has. And if it is possible that this COULD solve the problem or would definitely be a total waste of time.
