Subject:

Windows Hello Facial Recognition Missing After Windows 11 25H2 Update (KB5070773) on OmniBook Ultra

Message:

Hello HP Community,

After installing the latest Windows 11 cumulative update — 2025-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11, version 25H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5070773) (Build 26200.6901) — my HP OmniBook Ultra no longer recognizes me to sign in using Windows Hello Facial Recognition.

The “Facial Recognition (Windows Hello)” option has completely disappeared from Settings → Accounts → Sign-in Options. I’ve tried troubleshooting through Device Manager, reinstalling drivers, and checking Windows Updates, but nothing has restored the camera’s Hello functionality.

Could someone please help me re-enable Windows Hello facial recognition?
I would really like to sign in using the facial recognition feature again.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Hi @Cunumicita,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how disruptive it can be when Windows Hello Facial Recognition suddenly disappears, especially after a major update like Windows 11 25H2 (KB5070773) on your HP OmniBook Ultra. We're here to help you restore this feature so you can get back to signing in quickly and securely.

Recommended Steps from HP to Restore Windows Hello Facial Recognition

1. Check the IR Camera in Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X → Select Device Manager
  • Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras
  • Look for entries like IR Camera, Windows Hello Camera, or RealSense Camera
  • If missing or showing a warning:
    • Right-click and choose Scan for hardware changes
    • If still missing, proceed to reinstall drivers

2. Reinstall Camera and Chipset Drivers

  • Visit the support.hp.com/us-en
  • Download and install:
    • IR Camera Driver
    • Intel Chipset Driver
    • Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI)

Restart your laptop after installation.

3. Reset Windows Hello Setup

  • Go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in Options
  • If Facial Recognition is listed but unavailable:
    • Click Remove
    • Restart your PC
    • Go back and click Set up to re-enroll your face

4. Reset Biometric Database (Advanced)

If the option is completely missing:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run these commands: net stop biometricservice
                                             del /f /s /q %windir%\System32\WinBioDatabase\
                                             net start biometricservice

Then restart your PC and check Sign-in Options again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I follow all the steps up to "setup" Windows Hello. However, there is an X over the face. Therefore I couldn't setup.

This is a 6 month old OMNIBOOK and this is he third time I encounter with this issue. Please help!

Why You See an “X” Over the Face Icon in Windows Hello

This usually means that Windows Hello is unable to detect or activate the infrared (IR) camera required for facial recognition. It can happen due to:

  • A missing or corrupted IR camera driver
  • A Windows update that disrupted camera functionality
  • TPM (Trusted Platform Module) conflicts
  • Hardware or privacy settings disabling the camera

Steps to Fix Windows Hello Face Recognition on HP OmniBook

1. Confirm IR Camera Presence

Windows Hello Face Recognition only works if your laptop has an IR camera. If it doesn’t, facial recognition won’t be available.

  • Go to Device Manager > Imaging Devices.
  • Look for entries like IR Camera, RealSense, or Hello Camera.

If it’s missing, the driver may be corrupted or uninstalled.

2. Reinstall the IR Camera Driver

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Imaging Devices.
  3. Right-click the IR camera > Uninstall device.
  4. Check, delete the driver software for this device, then click Uninstall.
  5. Restart your laptop.
  6. Visit the Official HP® Support to download and reinstall the correct IR camera driver.

3. Remove and Re-add Windows Hello Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Under Face Recognition, click Remove.
  3. Under PIN, click Remove, then confirm.
  4. Restart your laptop.
  5. Go back and set up PIN first, then try Face Recognition again.

4. Clear TPM (Advanced – Use with Caution)

If TPM is interfering, clearing it may help, but back up your data first.

  1. Press Esc repeatedly during boot to enter the Startup Menu.
  2. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Navigate to Security > TPM Device.
  4. Select Clear TPM, save changes, and exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I went to Microsoft  website and I got the help through  a youtube video, and clear insrructions step by step. Withing 2 minutes the issue was resolved. The camera was turned off. The switch by the camera is so small that it was  hard to detect. It was a simple solution. Thank you

You’re absolutely right on some HP models, the camera privacy switch is quite small and can be easy to miss. It’s great that you found clear step-by-step guidance and were able to get everything working again so quickly.
