Hello, as in topic object i have a Envy DV6 7320el, windows 10 Home edition. After some recent windows updates i can't use the fingher print sensor, once i did, now not...

I've deleted all .dat file under C:\Windows\System32\WinBioDatabase\, uninstalled and reinstalled the device (using hp original driver and windows update one), rebooted the win services....but nothing worked!

Now all is managed by windows hello, but it says that my device is not compatible...also that is strange...because i've used that manager before!!! Why now not?

And more, deleting the .dat files under WinBioDatabase i can start the configuration but in the second step, soon after i've slided the finger, it says "there was a problem" and i can't go over...

Any suggestion?

Tnk so much!

Alessio

Well, it is possible that this vintage notebook is indeed no longer completely compatible with Windows 10.  Windows 10 is vastly different from when it was first introduced - things inside the File System may have finally changed enough that your older hardware is not able to "keep up".

Your Fingerprint Reader Software (2012)

Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver

 Excerpted from the Information file:

[Operating Systems]
W864=OEM
W8.164=OEM

[Devices]
USB\VID_138A&PID_0018="Validity Sensors (WBF) (PID=0018)"

NOTE:  In most cases, a driver that supports Windows 8.1 will also support Windows 10.

Download and save the driver to your computer.

Open your Device Manager > Expand category Biometrics (or similar)

If the driver is present, Right-Click and uninstall it.

If asked, tick the box / selection to delete the driver

Restart the computer and log in

Open File Explorer > navigate to your Downloads folder (or where ever you saved the driver)

Double-Click on the file to install it

After the driver is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Windows Fingerprint Logon

Generally, once the reader driver is installed, Windows Hello may at least work to the extent that you can set up the Windows fingerprint option to have Windows use the fingerprint reader to log into Windows.

If necessary, you could try removing the Windows Logon PIN and start over, adding a new PIN for Windows logon.

Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options

HP SimplePass Software

If you are not already doing so, update your HP SimplePass software.

This latest version can likely just be installed over the top of your previous HP SimplePass version 8.x

sp86959 HP SimplePass V8.01.92 W10 32-64bit.exe

Download, save, and then install the software.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

                ==========  Edits - 25 October 2018 - Added PID search and information  ==========

What is the PID?

If the Biometric device is installed, opening the device information provides the VID/PID.

VID = 16-bit vendor number (Vendor ID)

PID = 16-bit product number (Product ID)

Information is used to identify / find drivers for the device (if used / applicable)

USB VID/PID Identification

USB device plugged into the hardware identified by its VID/PID combination.

Windows key + X > M (opens Device Manager) >

Open / Click Biometric Devices

Right-Click Biometric Adapter >

Select Properties >

Tab Details > Under Property

Select "Hardware Ids" from the drop-down menu

Methods to find an elusive driver for your Device include

  • Use the built-in Windows device driver for your Operating System
  • Use a compatible driver for a similar / same device from another manufacturer (NOT tested by this author)
  • Use the HP driver provided for the device (that supports at least Windows 8.1)
  • :Arrow_Right:  Search for a compatible PID device driver at Microsoft®Update Catalog

             (For example, open the Catalog and enter your Hardware ID into the search window "PID 0018")

Well, i don't know how it solved but now works...

Seems that Windows 10 has a built in driver for fingerprint sensor PID 0018 that is not compatible, more over the sensor now is build by synaptics and HP doesn't updated drivers... Many users installed the lenovo software "Validity Fingerprint Common Driver" that is at https://support.lenovo.com/it/it/downloads/ds103635 and contains PID 0017.

The wizard setup fails because is not able to stop windows biometric service, but it create a directory under C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynFP\Shared\Drivers containig drivers that I used to update the device...now works.
