HP Envy 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After the latest windows 10 update the screen shrinks to 1/4 size when the lid is closed.  Setting the power option about what to do when the lid closes has no affect.  Does it on IE, Firefox and Windows

Hello, @jhobby2931 - Hope you are well 🙂

Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a great location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

I understand that the screen shrinks when the lid is closed after the Windows updates. Do you have an external monitor attached? Or are you simply closing the lid and then opening it at some other point? Let me know.

It certainly looks like an issue with the screen resolution. If you are using an external monitor your computer has to choose a resolution that is supported by both displays and this might cause the issue.

So I’d suggest you try and change the resolution of your screen to fix the issue. If that does not help, try to change the scaling as suggested below:

  1. Right-Click on the Desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll down and select “Advanced display settings”.
  3. Now, choose “Advanced sizing of text and other items”.
  4. Then set a custom scaling level - drag it to 100%.
  5. Apply the settings and check.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the reply,  This is just a laptop, no monitor.  This started right after Microsoft updated Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago.  I tried your procedure and it is a little different as there are no advanced desplay settings; however, I was able to select custom settings and set the scaling to 100%.  This had no affect.  My thought is that this is a driver problem with the laptop which is an ENVY 17 that origanally had Windows 7 but there appears to be no Windows 10 display driver for this system.

It has another problem that started with the installation of Windows 10 and that is the keyboard back lights don't come on whenit wakes up but will come on if I manually turn them on.  Again seems like a mismatch driver driver problem with the ENVY 7.

Hello, @jhobby2931

I do understand that you are having issues with the laptop. I was simply asking whether you are connecting an external display to your laptop while keeping the lid closed 😉

Clearly, that is not the case and I'd suggest you try and use HP Support Assistant to download the necessary drivers to update the old ones.

HP Support Assistant is a software program designed to help you keep your computer in working order, prevent potential problems from arising, and resolve problems quickly and easily. The program also provides valuable system information that you need when troubleshooting computer problems. Please go to http://hp.care/2gFA6Q8 to install the HP SA if you do not have it already.

Also, if you have the HP SA installed then go to http://hp.care/2gqoIri and follow the steps under “Checking for HP updates’ to find and install the updates.

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

Been there, done that.  The SA says there are no HP update available.

Hello, @jhobby2931

Did you try to change the display resolution? If not, try changing the resolution and see if that makes any difference.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest you perform a system restore and check.

If the issue started happening after a recent update, then you might be able to restore the system to a point before. System Restore automatically creates restore points, a memory of the system files and settings on the computer at a particular point in time. Then, when you use System Restore to restore your computer to a point in time before an issue began, System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.

Go to http://hp.care/2bS4d95 and follow the steps under “Restore your computer when Windows cannot start normally”.

Let me know how that goes!

Thank you 🙂
