Hi @ken8177,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for explaining the issue clearly. A black screen with date and time flashing on an HP laptop typically means the system is stuck in BitLocker recovery mode or a BIOS/UEFI recovery environment. When it asks for a Recovery Key, it’s referring to the BitLocker Recovery Key that protects your drive.
Here’s how to resolve this:
Step 1: Understand What the Recovery Key Is
- The BitLocker Recovery Key is a 48-digit numeric key.
- It was saved when BitLocker was enabled - usually in one of these places:
- Your Microsoft Account online.
- A USB drive you saved it to.
- A printout or file you stored.
- Your organization’s IT admin (if work laptop).
Step 2: Retrieve Your Recovery Key
- On another device, go to: 👉 HP PCs - Using BitLocker and finding the recovery key (Windows 11, 10) | HP® Support
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the laptop.
- Find the key matching your device name.
Step 3: Enter the Recovery Key
- Type the 48-digit key exactly as shown.
- Press Enter to unlock the drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
