Hi @Mumoz

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that the screen brightness is causing eye strain and that adjusting the brightness does not seem to be working. Here are the most effective steps to fix the brightness issue on your HP laptop when the screen is too dark and unresponsive:

1. Check Brightness in BIOS

  • Restart your laptop and keep Tapping on F10 to enter the BIOS.
  • If the screen is still dim in BIOS, it's likely a hardware issue (e.g., backlight failure).

2. Update or Reinstall Display Drivers

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager → Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click your graphics driver (e.g., Intel UHD, AMD Radeon) → Update driver.
  • If that doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop to reinstall it automatically.

3. Disable Adaptive Brightness

  • Go to Settings → System → Display → Turn off “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes”.
  • Also, go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Expand Display → Turn off adaptive brightness.

4. Use Windows Mobility Center

  • Press Win + X → Select Mobility Center.
  • Try adjusting brightness from there.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect everything and power it on.

6. Test with an External Monitor

  • Connect your laptop to an external display.
  • If the external screen is bright, your laptop screen/backlight may be faulty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
