How can I lower the brightness? I have tried to adjust the brightness in the settings, but it doesn't work. I have also tried to change the brightness using the F2, F3, and F4 keys, but that doesn't work either. What should I do?

Hi @June105

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when brightness controls don’t respond, especially after you’ve already tried both the Windows settings and the function keys.

Let’s go through the steps that can help restore brightness control on your HP system:

1. Update the graphics driver

  • Go to the HP Drivers and Software page.
  • Enter your product number.
  • Download and install the latest Intel Graphics driver (or AMD/NVIDIA if applicable).
  • Restart your laptop after installation.
  • Outdated drivers are one of the most common reasons brightness controls stop working.

2. Check Windows display settings

  • Right‑click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Scroll down to Brightness and color.
  • If the slider is missing or inactive, it usually indicates a driver issue, which updating should fix.

3. Use HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then select F2 – System Diagnostics.
  • Run the Display Test to confirm the panel is functioning correctly.
  • This rules out hardware faults.

4. Verify function key behavior

  • On some HP models, brightness keys require pressing Fn + F2/F3/F4 instead of just the function key.
  • Try holding Fn while pressing the brightness keys.

5. Power reset

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery if removable.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power on.
  • This clears temporary states that can block brightness control.

By refreshing the graphics driver and checking the function key behavior, brightness control usually returns.
