camera goes off then computer cannot locate a camera. I purchased a camera to attach, same problem

My camera goes off then the computer says it can not locate a camera. After having this problem I purchased a camera to attach, but I am still having the same problem. I do not have the camera off button that I read about while trying to research this problem. Please help. I am not very tech savvy but I am trying to resolve this issue. Thanks
