two days ago on jan 12. i did a BIOS update that was offered by HP support assistant app on HP laptop  PC 17-cr3000 with windows 11.

after the update the facial recognition stopped working. so after a little investigation, i noticed that the camera was no longer being recognized.

in device manager it dissapeared from main view and camera can only be seen (sometimes) under show hidden devices menu enabled. and camera itself is grayed out in there.

i then went into BIOS/firmware settings(F10) and clicked on option to restore bios to default settings. and the camera then came back and worked normally for a day, but then next morning same thing is happening. no camera detected. and device is missing from device manager.

i called HP and they are not being very nice. they want to charge me to join their buddy helper program and refuse to help even though the issue was cause by this latest BIOS update.

im trying to figure out how to roll back the BIOS update but it doesnt seem to be a simple task.

does any one know any fixes for this? in other threads there was someone who suggested there is a camera firmware update for camera itself that might help. but i can't find that update.

HP support is being extortionist, telling me nobody else has this issue so its not a common thing therefore i have to pay them to fix what their update has damaged.

Hi @cr34t0r,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Did you notice if the camera shows up under Imaging Devices or Integrated Camera before it disappears?
  • Have you tried checking Windows Update or HP Support Assistant for optional driver/firmware updates specifically related to the camera?
  • Do you recall the exact BIOS version you updated to on January 12?

Here are some steps you can try before attempting a BIOS rollback:

  1. Power Reset
    • Shut down your laptop completely.
    • Disconnect the power adapter.
    • Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge residual power.
    • Restart and check if the camera reappears.
  2. Enable Camera in BIOS
    • Restart your PC and press F10 to enter BIOS setup.
    • Look for Device Configuration or Security → Camera settings.
    • Ensure the camera is enabled. Save and exit.
  3. Update/Reinstall Camera Driver
    • Open Device Manager → View → Show hidden devices.
    • Right-click the grayed-out camera → Uninstall device.
    • Restart your PC. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
    • If not, download the latest RealSense/HP Camera driver from HP’s support site for your model.
  4. Check Windows Privacy Settings
    • Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
    • Ensure camera access is enabled for apps and Windows Hello.
  5. HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart and press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run a Component Test → Camera to verify if the hardware is detected at a low level.
  6. BIOS Rollback (if needed)
  • In BIOS setup (F10), check if there’s an option for “Restore Previous BIOS”.
  • Alternatively, visit HP’s support site for your model and look under BIOS → Previous Versions to download and reinstall an earlier BIOS.

    I hope this helps.
