Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

A previous forum on this issue has been closed but users, like me, continue to be burned by inaccurate and worthless error guidance. There is a button on HP ENVY x360 laptops, one that's not explained anywhere, that inactivates the camera. The error message presented indicates explicitly that "a camera cannot be found." The message should instead explain the existence of this switch (or a cover over the lens?) that can resolve the issue. HP is NOT my favorite laptop. Going forward, I'll stick with Dell.

Hi @Greystone_Guru,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're receiving a "Camera not installed" message on your HP ENVY x360 laptop, it means that the computer is not detecting the built-in camera. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
  • Look for "Imaging devices" or "Cameras" in the Device Manager. Expand this category.
  • If you don't see your camera listed or if there's a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation mark next to it, there may be a driver issue.

Update or Reinstall Camera Drivers:

  • Right-click on the camera device (if it's listed) and choose "Update driver" or "Uninstall device" if it has an exclamation mark.
  • If you choose to update the driver, Windows will search for the latest driver online. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • If you choose to uninstall the device, restart your computer and Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.

Check Privacy Settings:

  • Make sure that your camera is not disabled in the privacy settings of your laptop. Go to "Settings" > "Privacy" > "Camera" and ensure that the camera is enabled for the apps you want to use.

BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS settings (usually by pressing a specific key like F2 or Del during startup).
  • Look for an option related to the camera or webcam and ensure that it's enabled.

Physical Inspection:

  • Ensure that the camera is not physically covered by a sticker or tape. Sometimes, people cover their cameras for privacy reasons and forget to remove the cover.

System Restore:

  • If you recently made system changes or updates and the camera stopped working afterward, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state when the camera was functioning.

Driver Update Utility:

  • Visit the HP support website and download the latest camera drivers for your specific HP ENVY x360 model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
