Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Community! 🎉
I’m here to help you troubleshoot your issue and get things back on track. Just follow these steps below, and we’ll have you running smoothly in no time:
1. Look for the Kill Switch
Many newer HP laptops come with a built-in Kill Switch feature that physically disconnects the webcam for privacy and security purposes. This can be helpful for preventing unauthorized access to your camera. If your model includes a Kill Switch, make sure it’s turned on to ensure your webcam remains disabled when not in use.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
If Windows isn’t detecting your camera, sometimes a hard reset can help reinitialize the device. Follow these steps:
- Shut down your laptop completely.
- Unplug the power cable (if it’s a laptop with a removable battery, take out the battery as well).
- Hold the power button down for 15–20 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reinsert the battery (if you removed it) and plug the laptop back into the power source.
- Power on your laptop and check if the camera is now detected.
Once your computer reboots, check Device Manager again to see if the camera appears in the Cameras section.

3. Install or Update the Driver
Occasionally, Windows requires an updated driver for your camera to function properly. To ensure you have the latest driver, right-click your camera in Device Manager, choose "Update Driver," and select "Search Automatically for updated driver software." Windows Update will provide the latest driver version.
4. Reinstall the Webcam Driver
If the camera still isn’t working, you may need to reinstall the webcam driver. Here’s how to do it:
- Open Device Manager, right-click on the camera device, and select "Properties."
- Switch to the "Driver" tab and click "Uninstall Device."
- After uninstalling, restart your computer.
- Once your PC reboots, open Device Manager again, click "Action" from the top menu, and select "Scan for hardware changes" to automatically reinstall the drivers.
Lastly, make sure you install any pending Windows updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on Check for Updates.
- Install any updates that are available and check if this resolves the issue.
