Hi @Rick2457,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 17.3” Laptop (17-da0000 series) camera shows only a grey screen despite the camera light being on and apps recognizing the camera, and you've already tried the basic resets, here are the most likely causes and step-by-step solutions:

1. Check the Camera Cover First.

Your model includes a manual camera shutter (physical privacy cover) near the webcam.

  • Slide the cover fully open.
    • Sometimes it looks slightly open, but still blocks the lens.
    • Even if the webcam light turns on, a partially covered lens can cause a grey or black image.

🔁 Test again in the Camera app after opening the shutter completely.

2. If the shutter is open and you're still seeing a grey screen:

  1. Test in Another App
Try using the camera in ZoomTeams, or Skype to see if the issue is app-specific.

  2. Reset the Camera App
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Search for Camera, click the three dots, and select Advanced options.
    • Click Reset.

  3. Check Camera Permissions
    • Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
    • Ensure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are both enabled.

  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart and press F2 repeatedly to enter diagnostics.
    • Run the Webcam test to rule out hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
