I am so glad I saw this post!!! Thanks for writing about this problem. When I read your post, I tried changing the brightness on my laptop and found out I also have the same problem too. I also updated to Windows 8.1 yesterday and my laptop is an HP ENVY dv6

Hello. I understand you are having issues adjusting the brightness after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I believe you should download and install all the latest drivers for the computer, to address the issue. Either you can search for them, or I can search for them if you give me the model number. If you don't know where to find that, please look here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

I, too, cannot change the brightness on my HP Envy 14 Beats Edition laptop after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I've downloaded all the latest drivers from:
Everything worked well in Windows 8 before the upgrade.
Any suggestions or drivers I missed?

Hello nedarb. The link you provided does list available drivers for this computer. These drivers, however, are for Windows 7 64-bit. Since there are no drivers for 8.1, updating drivers from our website is not a valid troubleshooting step.
However, I would make sure all your Windows Updates are complete. You can also try updating all drivers through Device Manager. To do that, in Device Manager, right-click on each driver and select "Update Device". Let me know what happens.

Ok, I checked Windows Update and I have the latest updates. I also went to Device Manager and there are no devices in the list that have any issues (driver issues) and I tried updating the Intel Management Engine Interface driver. No luck.
Do you know which driver is needed to control the brightness?

The driver to control your brightness on Windows 8.1 does not exist yet, as the previous link demonstrates. For now, the only solution I can offer is to do a System Restore, which will eliminate 8.1, and leave you with functional drivers. You can always re-update 8.1 at any time. Here is information on how to do a System Restore: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/products/features/system-restore

I KNOW THE ANOTHER SOLUTION FOR BRIGHTNESS CONTROL PROBLEM.....
1) PRESS "WINDOWS KEY + R"
2) IN RUN BOX TYPE "msconfig" PRESS "OK"
3) SYSTEM CONFIGURATION BOX WILL OPEN, CLICK ON "SERVICES" TAB
4) CLICK ON "DISABLE ALL"
5) AGAIN CLICK ON "ENABLE ALL"
6) THEN PRESS "OK"
7) THEN IT WILL ASK YOU TO RESTART YOUR PC/LAPTOP CLICK ON "RESTART"
😎 AFTER RESTART CHECK THE BRIGHTNESS CONTROLLER (IT'S WORKS ON MY LAPTOP ) AND THIS PROCESS DOES NOT REQUIRED ANY DRIVER UPDATE.
THANK YOU FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO'S READING THIS AND TRIED ON THEIR PC/LAPTOPS
