The laptop screen is black but if I connect an external screen, the external screen works fine. How do I reset my laptop screen?

It sounds like your laptop's internal display is having issues, especially since the external screen works fine. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you reset and diagnose the problem with your laptop screen:

Check Display Output Mode

Your laptop might be set to use only the external display. To switch back to the internal screen:

  • Press Win + P and use the arrow keys to select "PC screen only" or "Duplicate", then press Enter.

Restart Graphics Driver

You can quickly restart the graphics driver by pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. If the screen flickers or turns on, it indicates a temporary driver issue.

Adjust Brightness

Sometimes, the brightness might be set too low:

  • Try pressing Fn + F3 (or the brightness key) to increase the brightness.

Update/Reinstall Graphics Driver

Since the external display works, you can update or reinstall the graphics driver:

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click your graphics card (Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) and select Update driver.
  4. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop.

Check for Windows Updates

Make sure your system is up to date:

  • Go to Settings → Windows Update and install any available updates.

Hard Reset Your Laptop

Performing a hard reset can help:

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Disconnect all external devices.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Plug in the charger and restart.

BIOS/Hardware Check

To check if the hardware is functioning:

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • If the BIOS screen appears, your screen is functioning at a hardware level. If it remains black, there may be a hardware failure.

Perform a System Restore (If Recent Issue)

If the issue started recently, you can restore your system:

  • Boot into Advanced Startup (Shift + Restart).
  • Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore and select a restore point.
