Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

have a Spectre Laptop that has all of a sudden begun to continually refresh the desktop. Funny enough when you manage to open a program, it will stay on the screen but the desktop continues to refresh continuously. This also occurs with the attached monitors. was working fine a day or so ago. Everything seems to work, but difficult to select tasks due to the continual desktop refreshing. How do I fix?

@helpme441 Greetings from the HP Community!

Here are a few steps that should help your cause:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
  4. Type the following command to stop File Explorer and press Enter:

    taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

  5. Type the following command to delete all the thumbnail database files without asking for confirmation and press Enter:

    del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db

  6. Type the following command to start File Explorer and press Enter:

    start explorer.exe

  7. Close Command Prompt to complete the task.

If that doesn't help, I suggest you make use of the below steps:

1) Create and Open an empty folder on the Desktop
2) Copy all desktop icons into the folder.
3) And the Refreshing should stop,
4) Return all icons back onto the desktop and check if it works fine.
