Hi, I have a display problem with my HP Spectre x360, which runs windows 11. The colours and definition of images change according to whether I have the mains plugged in. With the mains plugged in it displays correctly, but when running off the battery the colours become more false and the definition lowers. To make things more complicated it will display correctly in battery mode if I have an explorer window floating above the image, but only if its not in dark mode. As soon as I close the floating window the image reverts slowly over about 5 seconds. The image shows the correct display on the left and on the right the image is much more fuzzy and the colours are wrong, there is also a white border around the orange letters that should not be there.

Hi @ajjps ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a peculiar issue with your HP Spectre x360's display that is influenced by whether the laptop is running on battery power or plugged into the mains. This issue might be related to power settings, graphics drivers, or other display-related configurations. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Power Settings:

  • Check your power settings in both scenarios (on battery and plugged in). Right-click on the battery icon in the taskbar and select "Power Options." Make sure that the power plans are consistent in terms of display settings.

Graphics Drivers:

  • Ensure that your graphics drivers are up-to-date. You can do this by going to the Device Manager, locating your graphics card under "Display adapters," right-clicking, and selecting "Update driver." You can also visit the official HP website to download and install the latest graphics drivers for your model.

Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your operating system is up-to-date. Check for and install any pending Windows updates. Sometimes, display-related issues can be resolved through system updates that include driver updates and bug fixes.

Calibration Settings:

  • Check your display calibration settings. Windows allows you to calibrate your display to ensure accurate colors. You can access these settings by typing "Calibrate display color" in the Windows search bar.

Graphics Settings:

  • Open the graphics control panel for your graphics card (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings) and check if there are any power-related settings that might be affecting the display quality. Adjust these settings as needed.

Dark Mode:

  • The fact that the issue changes with the presence of a floating window, especially in dark mode, suggests there may be some interaction with the operating system's theme. Consider toggling between light and dark mode to see if this has any impact on the issue.

Third-Party Software:

  • If you have any third-party display management software installed, try disabling or uninstalling it temporarily to see if it has any effect on the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for replying,

I tried your suggestions without success I'm afraid. I have also tried;

Auto color management: set both on and off

System/display/Adaptive color: set both on and off

System/display/graphics/apps/photos/graphics preference: set both to high performance and power saving modes

Personalisation/colours/Accent color: set to auto and manual

Colours/defult app mode: Set both to both dark and light

System/display/color profile: toggled between: native, photos and video, native and sRGB

One thing that does work is in Accessibility/contrast themes: setting it to high contrast [desert] mode?

It's all very curious. Any other suggestions ?

Thanks AJJPS
