HP ENVY 15-j151sa Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everybody - I've had this machine a long time, and only use it for one specific purpose, so I don't want to replace it. I bought it with W8.1, and I think got a free upgrade to W10/64.

Unfortunately, the hard disk failed completely, so I lost everything. No problem downloading W10 from MS and reinstalling, and have everything good except the video drivers. I have tried everything I can find here, forums, AMD, everywhere - but nothing works, so the video controller has a yellow exclamation mark in DM, and I can't change the screen resolution.

I'd be very grateful if anybody could point me to the correct driver - I know it exists, because it was fine before the crash 😊

Devices listed in DM are:

Thanks!

My last shot at trying to help...

See if this W10 driver works:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71870.html

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71870.exe

I explored the driver file using the free 7-Zip file utility and I see driver support for both the HD 8750M as well as the HD 8650G.

Hi:

Unfortunately, there never were W10 drivers for that graphics setup for your notebook.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if this W8.1 AMD graphics driver works for you:

Thanks Paul - I had already tried that one, as it happens. It makes the devices look OK in DM, but I still can't set the screen res - it's greyed out.

So I'm stumped. Thing is, since I upgraded to W10 on this laptop what, 10 years ago? it worked fine, and I could set the res to 1280 x 720 (my eyes aren't fantastic now). So there must have been a driver out there somewhere, I guess...

You're very welcome.

I assume that you tried the W10 driver from AMD?

If so, unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.

Yes I have tried many versions from that site - spent a day on it now 🙄

As their Catalyst software runs through a very lengthy process, with some versions you can see the two devices (8650G and 8750M) disappear from DM, then reappear without the yellow exclamation mark, then repeat the process with the mark coming back 😖

Then, it varies from version to version, but typically the process will end with a message saying that the laptop does not contain the correct hardware - and yet the process identified and installed it before the error.

I'm close to scrapping the machine now - I've spent large chunks of a week on it.

Funny thing is... I think you said HP never provided a W10 driver for this machine, yet many thousands of them must have been sold, and given the free upgrade from W8 - W10 - they can't all be in this position surely? Also the fact that it worked fine for 10 years (I bought it in 2015) - I wonder what driver it was using 😒
