hp notebook 2000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My touchpad and cursor have been erratic.  If I click to open google I may get 5 windows open or as I move the cursor it will open programs I have not cliicked on.

I have

uninstalled and reinstalled driver, no change

change sensitivity of touch pad, no change

slowed movement of cursor, no change

did diagnostic test on mouse, tested ok

turned off precision sensitivity on mouse,  little change

Should I try the new driver on synaptics website?  Windows 10 PS/2 & SMBus Devices v19.0.19.1 even though when I check for updates it says my touchpad driver is current?

Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the touchpad is erratic,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you check if an alternate or external mouse?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

Attempt using an alternate/external mouse, if that doesn't work either, follow the below steps:

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:

Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.

  • 1.   Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.

  • 2.   Click Device Manager.

  • 3.   Click + sign next to Mouse.

  • 4.   Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".

  • 5.   Restart your computer.

And then install the drivers from the HP website: Click here,

If the issue persists, uninstall the drivers again and install the Synaptics drivers from the Synaptics website.

If I have helped you resolve the issue,

I am able to use a mouse connected.
I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling drivers but it didn't help.
I chose the compatible driver from Microsoft with a little improvement, but still is selecting and opening things as I move the cursor.

Any help will be so appreciated.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

If you've already done all the steps as advised previously and an external mouse works fine,

It seems to be a hardware malfunction within the touchpad, I recommend you Contact HP to set up a repair/replacement service:

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

If I have helped you resolve the issue,
