grainy webcam

My webcam video is very grainy, how can i improve the quality

It works similar to cameras, please give more light to the object first.

Even when i put additional light on the subject the camera is still grainy.  When I use my Logitech camera on my desktop the picture is clearer in all circumstances.  Could this be because the resolution on the laptop is lower?
