upon starting, my brothers laptop (model: 17z-cs200, prodID: 8wh69av) displays only a grey screen with a white horizontal bar and some colours. i have dug through several similar problems and found no solution.
when plugged into an external display, it is recognised as connected but the screen remains black. even using f4 a few times provides no improved results.
following a trouble shooting post, I multi pressed f10 to open a menu to fix, i can tell the menu is open because the grey slightly changes upon arrow key traversal or esc and because pressing any keys but esc or the arrows causes a loud beep. however, the screen and menu remain unreadable.

most other solutions require being able to navigate the computer, this is not possible in this situation. hoping for a solution that doesn't require data loss, however if that's the only way, we'll bite the bullet to regain operation.
