Greetings @JamesD357

Welcome to HP Community and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are looking to get the external monitor to support 2560 X 1080p, is that right?

To be able to check on the exact specifications of the computer and the external monitor, I would need to the product number of the computer and model number of the external display.

Which version of HDMI cable are you using?

Which operating system is installed on your computer?

These basic details will help us to guide you correctly.

The below link will just help you find the basic display settings for the computer.

No, the monitor supports 2560x1080p. I have been using it for six or seven years with an old laptop. It is my brand new HP laptop that will not support 2560 x 1080p.

Thanks for replying @JamesD357

I am sorry for the difficulty you are facing in getting your new HP AI 17t‑cn500 laptop to output 2560 × 1080p through HDMI. I understand how frustrating it must be when your monitor has worked perfectly at that resolution with another system, yet the new laptop will not adjust to it. I appreciate the effort you’ve already made in testing and confirming the monitor’s capabilities.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Confirm HDMI Cable and Port

  • Ensure you are using a high‑speed HDMI 2.0 or later cable.
  • Connect directly to the laptop’s HDMI port without adapters or hubs.

Step 2: Update Graphics Drivers

  • Press the Windows key and type “Device Manager.”
  • Expand “Display adapters,” right‑click your graphics card, and select “Update driver.”
  • Choose “Search automatically for drivers.”
  • You can also update through the HP App for the latest tested drivers.

Step 3: Adjust Display Settings

  • Right‑click on the desktop and select “Display settings.”
  • Scroll down and click “Advanced display settings.”
  • Select the external monitor and check the available resolutions.
  • If 2560 × 1080p is not listed, click “Display adapter properties” > “List All Modes” and see if it appears there.

Step 4: Check Monitor Driver

  • Some monitors require an INF driver to expose all supported resolutions.
  • Visit the monitor manufacturer’s website and install the latest driver for your model.

Step 5: Use Custom Resolution (if supported)

  • Open the graphics control panel (Intel Graphics Command Center or NVIDIA/AMD software depending on your GPU).
  • Create a custom resolution of 2560 × 1080p at 60 Hz.
  • Apply and test the setting.

Step 6: Update System BIOS and Firmware

These steps should help align the laptop’s HDMI output with your monitor’s supported resolution.

Very disappointing, a new laptop HDMI port does not support 2560 x 1080, when my 8-year laptop HDMI port does. I had to buy a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

@JamesD357

I’m truly sorry for the disappointment this has caused. I understand how frustrating it feels when a brand‑new laptop doesn’t support the resolution you’ve relied on for years with an older system, and you’ve had to purchase an additional adapter just to achieve the setup you need.

Your persistence in testing and finding a workaround is appreciated, and I regret that the HDMI port on your AI 17t‑cn500 did not meet your expectations for 2560 × 1080 output.
