Hi @hebitants,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already. Let's try a few additional steps to resolve the issue with the brightness control on your HP laptop.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Go to the Device Manager.
  • Expand the "Display adapters" section.
  • Right-click your graphics driver and select "Update driver."
  • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."

Reinstall Graphics Drivers:

  • Uninstall the current graphics driver.
  • Go to the manufacturer's website (Intel, NVIDIA, AMD) and download the latest driver for your specific GPU model.
  • Install the downloaded driver and restart your laptop.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
  • Select your active power plan and click "Change plan settings."
  • Click "Change advanced power settings."
  • Expand "Display" and then "Enable adaptive brightness," and make sure it is turned off for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."

Check Windows Update:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Check for updates and install any that are available.

BIOS/UEFI Update:

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Search for your specific laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS/UEFI update if available.

Hotkey Driver Installation:

  • Some HP laptops require specific hotkey drivers to control brightness.
  • Go to the HP Support website and look for any hotkey driver or utility specific to your laptop model.
  • Download and install it, then restart your laptop.

Registry Edit:

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\DCI.
  • If there is a value named Timeout, set it to 0. If not, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value named Timeout and set its value to 0.
  • Restart your laptop.

Resetting Power Plans:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press Enter.
  • Restart your laptop.

Advanced Steps

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to try the following:

Check for Third-Party Software:

  • Uninstall any third-party software that could interfere with display settings, such as screen dimming utilities or power management tools.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Run HP's built-in hardware diagnostics to check if there's a hardware issue with your display.
  • You can access this by restarting your laptop and pressing F2 repeatedly to enter the diagnostics menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for these steps! My brightness had been dark for the longest and It'd been driving me crazy. I just reinstalled the Graphics Drivers and as soon as it started downloading the brightness changed and the buttons for the brightness are working again. Thank you!
