Recently my computer is not recognizing that there is an internal camera.  the driver appears to be up to date and I have toggled off and on the physical switch to make sure it is turned on.

Hi  @RhinebeckJMM

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that your HP True Vision 5MP camera is no longer being detected by the computer even after confirming the driver is up to date and checking the physical camera switch. I'll be glad to help you check this further.

To better understand the situation, could you kindly provide:

  • Does the camera appear under Device Manager > Cameras or Imaging Devices?
  • Do you see any error messages, unknown devices, or warning symbols in Device Manager?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

1. Check Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Cameras or Imaging Devices.
  3. If the HP True Vision camera is listed:
    • Right-click it and select Disable device.
    • Wait a few seconds and select Enable device.
  4. If you see an unknown device, kindly share a screenshot.

2. Run Windows Camera Troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings -System -Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Locate Camera and run the troubleshooter.
  3. Follow any recommendations provided.

3. Verify Camera Privacy Settings

  1. Open Settings -Privacy & Security -Camera.
  2. Ensure:
    • Camera access is turned on.
    • Let apps access your camera is enabled.
    • The application you are using has camera permissions enabled.

4. Perform a Hardware Reset

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Disconnect the charger and any external devices.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect power and start the computer.

5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics - Click here for steps

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn it back on and repeatedly tap F2.
  3. Run the available camera or component diagnostics.
  4. Let us know the results.

Based on the symptoms you've described, the system is currently having difficulty detecting the built-in camera hardware. This can happen if the camera has been disabled at the software level, a driver or Windows update has affected communication with the device, the camera privacy settings have changed, or the camera hardware is not being properly recognized by the system.

Since you've already confirmed the physical camera switch and driver status, checking Device Manager, diagnostics, and system settings will help determine whether the issue is software-related or if the camera hardware requires further attention.

I hope this helps.
