HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f1000 (508S0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

After some windows updates and/or driverapp updates, the built-in camera does not start.  Windows otherwise finishes the startup and informs that logon with camera does not work because camera did not start, so use logon with password instead - works OK and logon completes. Camera remains without functioning. HP support Assistant cannot find any errors. Driver update app cannot find error, Windows update cannot repair either. What to do ?

@ErikH1944, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
We understand that you are facing the issue with the built-in camera not starting on your HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f1000 (508S0AV) after Windows or driver updates. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue

Reinstall the Camera Driver

Sometimes updates corrupt or disable the camera driver. Here's how to reinstall:

  1. Press Win + X → Select Device Manager
  2. Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras
  3. Right-click on the camera device → Select Uninstall device
  4. Restart your PC. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

If not, download the original driver from HP: Official HP® Support

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

Use HP’s built-in diagnostics tool to test the camera hardware:

Check Windows Privacy Settings

Sometimes Windows blocks camera access:

  1. Go to SettingsPrivacy & SecurityCamera
  2. Ensure Camera access is turned On
  3. Allow apps to access your camera

BIOS Update (if needed)

If none of the above work, check for a BIOS update:

If the camera still doesn’t work after these steps:

  • Try a System Restore to a point before the update

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
