HP ZBook Studio x360 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to update to a later (the latest) nVidia driver 397.93 (recommended by the nVidia website download help) but when I run the installer, the "checking for compatible hardware" stops the installation cause it cannot find any compatible hardware.

Rightclicking on the the driver in device manager (searching for updates) will not find a new one.

Using the HP Support Assistant will not find one either.

But I have applications in need of CUDA acceleration using newer versions of the driver so I am sort of stuck.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Max

You're very welcome, Max.

If you want to use the latest driver from Nvidia, you should be using this driver...

R390 U8 (392.00)   2018.9.5

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/137614/en-us

Here is a partial copy and paste of the driver setup information file which shows driver support for the hardware ID you posted...

[Manufacturer]
%NVIDIA_A% = NVIDIA_Devices,NTamd64.10.0,NTamd64.10.0...14310

%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.8427.103C% = Section108, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_8427103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.8429.103C% = Section110, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_8429103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.842A.103C% = Section108, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_842A103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.842C.103C% = Section110, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_842C103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.842D.103C% = Section108, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_842D103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.842F.103C% = Section110, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_842F103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.844F.103C% = Section108, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_844F103C
%NVIDIA_DEV.1CBB.8451.103C% = Section110, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_8451103C

Hi, Max:

What is the hardware ID of your Quadro P1000 graphics adapter?

Use this guide for how to find that information...

Thanks for the fast reply!

Hardware IDs:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_844F103C&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_844F103C
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&CC_030000

Brilliant - not entirely sure why the search found non-working drivers - but I am not picky. . .

It works!

Many thanks!

You're very welcome.

Use this general search link to manually find the latest driver next time...

There is no support for PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_844F103C in the Quadro New Features driver for Quadro Notebook GPUs on the nVidia web site. My ZBook Studio x360 G5 (with a Xeon E-2186M processor) has the same GPU as yours; I expect they all use this GPU.

There is support for that hardware ID in the Optimal Drivers for Enterprise driver for Quadro Notebook GPUs on the nVidia web site - currently this is R390 U8, which is the 21.23.13.9200 driver (HP ship 21.23.13.9176 with the ZBook Studio x360 G5). This driver will have only bugfixes and no new features over the HP shipped driver.

I guess that HP didn't want the support burden of users installing the QNF driver and then complaining about any issues that arose. Instead, they insisted on the conservative ODE branch, which is the ISV certified branch that many workstation customers will want anyway.

I'm guessing you want CUDA 9.2 support - and you're out of luck for now, unfortunately. ODE will jump forward feature wise in the future, but ODE is like a Long Term Stability branch; features mature in the GeForce and Quadro New Features drivers before making it to ODE.

Ahh..so that is indeed true. I'm definitely in need of CUDA 9.2, will have to wait then. . .

Bummer.
