Initial issue: Keyboard backlight wouldn't stay on. That's what I'm trying to solve here.
I was trying to get the keyboard backlight to just be on so I could see my keys!! HP Spectre apparently doesn't have this issue addressed. I found 2 janky fixes....
1) Involves a little series of couple easy steps you have to do ,and it worked temporarily, and I wish I settled on that.
Go to the touchpad settings (fr Control panel / Devices)
Make sure the touchpad is in the ON position--
Press down the touchpad (I press it in the lower left corner completely pressed down
WHILE holding it down, toggle OFF off the touchpad with a mouse (make sure it does it in one motion -- (meaning if it goes on on it won’t work) - So press the corner down, hold it, & switch to OFF, then move the mouse away from the button
Let go of the touchpad
The keyboard light will stay on as long as you use the laptop (your touchpad will not work--that is the only downfall but if you have a mouse connected it doesn't really bother me ) but it definitely works been doing it for about a week now.
(When you restart the computer or shut it off you just have to redo it every time)

2) involved some regedit keys and then setting up a batch task scheduler or whatever it's called. Things I haven't done before but tried. I don't know if that's caused additional problems now but it was something I tried.
Maybe i didn't use the files right that the guy had in a zip file hosted online... I don't know. I was desperate to see my keys and so sick of paying $2gs for a laptop and then a primary, main, regular problem like this makes the entire experience totally jacked up.. FIX IT ALREADY HP god **bleep** it im so frustrated by what happened here.
link to download the zip that has all the premade files and readme and a bunch of little things.

This has been tested on 13-aw0013dx.
Use it on you own risk, it is not guaranteed to be safe :)
a) Recent Windows 10 versions do not allow vendor signed drivers, they require WHQL signatures. I don't have the time to get that, so the following registry settings will allow the insdtallaiton of vendor signed drivers.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Policy
BootUpgradedSystem = 0
UpgradedSystem = 0
WhqlDeveloperTestMode = 1
WhqlSettings = e0000001
b) The following registry setting will disable the Synaptics touchpad feature that turns the backlight on when one touches the pad. This is needed as without this change, using the pad will reset the backlight to the usual timout when touched.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SynTP\Parameters
KBCNotifyConfig = 0
After applying a) and b), reboot.
c) Create a bat file (example provided) with the commands below, and configure it (task scheduler) to run at logon as administrator. You can also run this manually as administrator to test the driver - after you run it, the light should stay on.
sc create KBCDrv type=kernel binpath=C:\Work\KBCDRV\KBCDrv.sys
sc start KBCDrv
sc stop KBCDrv
sc delete KBCDrv
.... so this was the process I followed. When I got to C, to test the bat file to see if it worked..... i couldn't get it to work. But i tried to schedule it anyway. Nothing happened. So nothing happened but i followed these steps...
Nothing ever came of either of these fixes long term. When I went back today to finally try and figure out what else I could do to make my keyboard work,, and through this process I decided I ought to just uninstall the keyboard drivers, and reinstall and start fresh.
the backlight hasn't been on for maybe 3 to 6 months. That's when I tried those fixes above.... The touchpad one worked.it just had to be repeated each time. I couldn't handle that.
THe bat file, adn the regedit thing, never got anything from that process to do anything at all.
I eventually reversed the REGEDIT changes bacak to the orginal ones to the best of my ability.
Just found the backups i saved and changed them back over.Think i did it right.
Another weird thing I noticed sorta sometime recently,last few months maybe.. When I would start ny computer every time, I would get a certificate warning or error or sonething. With a thermal label printer I have for postage. IT's a Zebra brand printer and all of a sudden, im not sure what changed to makeit do this, but I would get a weird certificate request every boot up. Well I don't know for sure at all that it was a zebra certificate or whatever. For some reason, oh yeah>
So zebra has a startup application and it has its own little popup box every boot up. Adn they sorta popup around the same time so I think at first I just assumed it was zebrabut I cant confirm that at all.
When I expand the windows dialog popup, theres' an arrow down and I can like scroll through a giant list of things Im not familri with so i t could be anything having to do with anything.
I just always click CANCEL I think. oR SOMETHING ok or Yes or whatever. NOthing ever happens. I know nothing.
LOL
Ok back to my troubleshooting. So im trying to uninstall my keyboard drivers just to start fresh and reinstall everything.....
Followed some online processes, Start >> device manager >> keyboard >> select the keyboard(s) and uninstall driver. I did this for both keyboards listed here (It was like p2 device and hd keyboard maybe) I uninstalled drivers for both.... and they had me restart... I went right back to device manager, they were both still there. I uninstalled them again. restarted. Did this 2 times maybe 3. Then eventually 1 keyboard seemed to no longer be in the device manager.
I also went to Start >> search >> keyboard >> Bluetooth and devices >> devices >> input >> to select the keyboard, but i didn't see a keyboard option there.
So I am on the HP site, trying to find articles on how to do this right. I'm in HP community going to post an article, it asks me to download the HP SUPPORT SOLUTION FRAMEWORK to be able to detect my system I think.... I download it and install and then I get my first error:
HP Support Solution Framework
HP Support Solutions Framework was not installed
successfully. An error occurred during the installation.: -3
So all I can do is close the dialog.
I get a compatibility assistant saying:
Program Compatibility Assistant
This program might not have installed correctly
7z Setup SFX
Igor Pavlov
If this program didn't install correctly, you can try installing the program
Your using compatibility settings
I click install using compatibility settings
then the troubleshooter pops up.
But nothing is working. at all.. I end up checking my windows update for some reason, maybe I got a pop up, or an online suggestion, or i just ended up there, thinking why don't i check for updates.
Then I see windows update had an error
Canon printer update this morning.
Install error - 0x800f020b
So I started trying to fix my keyboard backlight.
Now I don't know what in the hell is happening, and I have no idea what to do or where to start.

I do not know what is going on or what the problem is, but I do know that you can do a factory restore of your laptop
HP is removing cloud recovery for system over 5 years old. You may want to get a copy of the cloud recovery before it is too late.
Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.

Alternately, download from the MS windows store
