Hi @willm13

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the screen brightness is not working on your HP laptop, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and fix the issue:

1. Use the Keyboard Function Keys

  • On HP laptops, you can often adjust the brightness using the F keys on the keyboard.
    • F2 and F3 are commonly used to decrease and increase brightness.
    • You may need to press and hold the "Fn" key while pressing the brightness keys (usually F2 to decrease, F3 to increase).

2. Check the Power Settings (Windows)

Sometimes, Windows power settings can affect screen brightness. To check or adjust these settings:

  • Right-click on the battery icon in the taskbar and select Power Options.
  • Make sure you're using the Balanced power plan.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your active power plan.
  • Under Adjust plan brightness, make sure both the On battery and Plugged in settings are adjusted to your preference.
  • If you see adaptive brightness options, turn them on/off to test if it helps.

3. Update Your Graphics Drivers

Outdated or incorrect graphics drivers can prevent brightness adjustment from working. To update the drivers:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • Restart your laptop after updating the drivers.

4. Enable Adaptive Brightness (Windows 10 or 11)

Windows has a feature called adaptive brightness that adjusts the screen brightness based on ambient light. If it's not working correctly, you may need to enable or disable it:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display.
  • Scroll down to Brightness and color.
  • Make sure Change brightness automatically when lighting changes is set to On (or toggle it off to see if that helps).

5. Check for Windows Updates

Ensure that your Windows OS is fully updated, as there may be updates for the graphics or power management system that can help resolve the brightness issue:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates and install any pending updates.
  • Restart your laptop after updating.

6. Reinstall the Display Drivers

If updating the drivers didn't help, try reinstalling the display drivers:

  • In Device Manager, expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click on your graphics card and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver upon restart.
  • Check if the brightness issue is resolved after the system reinstalls the driver.

I hope this helps.
