Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check Cable Connections (If Using External Display)
If you're using an external monitor, ensure that the cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.) is securely connected and capable of supporting 144Hz. Some older cables may not support higher refresh rates.
Update Graphics Drivers
Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers could be causing the issue. Follow these steps to update the drivers:
- Go to Device Manager: Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display Adapters: Find your graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD) under Display Adapters.
- Update Drivers: Right-click on the graphics card and choose Update driver.
- Search automatically: Select the option to let Windows search for the most up-to-date driver.
- Restart the laptop: Once the update is complete, restart the laptop and check if the flickering persists.
Alternatively, you can go directly to the NVIDIA or AMD website (depending on your graphics card) and download the latest drivers for your system.
Change Power Settings
High refresh rates require more power, so ensure your laptop is set to a high-performance power plan:
- Go to Power Settings: Right-click on the Start menu, select Power Options.
- Change Plan Settings: Click on Additional power settings on the right side.
- Select High Performance: Ensure you're on the High Performance plan, not Power Saver or Balanced.
Reconfigure Refresh Rate Settings
Sometimes, Windows might not be applying the correct settings. Follow these steps to ensure the refresh rate is set correctly:
- Right-click on Desktop: Select Display settings.
- Advanced Display Settings: Scroll down and click on Advanced display settings.
- Refresh Rate: Under Refresh Rate (Hz), select 144Hz.
- Confirm: After selecting 144Hz, click Apply and confirm the change.

Check the GPU Control Panel (For NVIDIA or AMD)
Sometimes, the refresh rate needs to be configured directly from the GPU control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings).
For NVIDIA Users:
- Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Under Display, click on Change resolution.
- Select 144Hz from the drop-down under Refresh rate.
- Click Apply.
For AMD Users:
- Right-click on the desktop and select AMD Radeon Settings.
- Go to the Display section and find the refresh rate setting.
- Set it to 144Hz.
Check the Graphics Hardware
Ensure your graphics card supports 144Hz at your screen’s native resolution (e.g., 1080p). If your graphics card is outdated or underpowered, it may struggle with 144Hz refresh rates. Check the specifications of your GPU to confirm if it's compatible.

Disable Hardware Acceleration
If you're experiencing flickering in certain applications (e.g., web browsers), try disabling hardware acceleration within the application settings:
For Chrome:
- Go to Settings > Advanced > System.
- Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
For Microsoft Edge:
- Go to Settings > System and Performance.
- Toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available.
BIOS Update
Sometimes, a BIOS update can resolve hardware-related issues. Check HP's support page for your laptop model (HP Pavilion 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop) and see if there is a BIOS update available.
Test on Another Monitor
If you're using an external monitor, test it with another device or test another monitor with your laptop to rule out monitor-specific issues.
Revert to 60Hz
If the flickering persists despite troubleshooting, you might want to revert to 60Hz temporarily until you find a solution. If you have a 144Hz monitor, but the laptop only supports 60Hz, there could be hardware limitations.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Community! 🎉
I’m here to help you troubleshoot your issue and get things back on track. Just follow these steps below, and we’ll have you running smoothly in no time:
Revert to Previous BIOS Version:
- The BIOS update might have caused the flickering. Try rolling back to the previous version of the BIOS by downloading it from HP's support page for your laptop model.
Reset BIOS to Default:
- Go into the BIOS settings by pressing F10 during boot and reset it to default settings to see if that helps.
Battery Calibration Check:
- Double-check the battery calibration steps you followed. Incorrect calibration could be affecting performance, so consider performing it again properly.
Test Without BIOS Update:
- If you still have the BIOS update file, you can reinstall it to see if it fixes the issue or causes it again.
I’m pretty confident this will do the trick! But hey, if you run into any bumps along the way or need a little extra help, just give me a shout! I’ve got your back. 💪
