Microsoft Windows 11

The screen sometimes suddenly flickers while working.
It doesn't matter what you're doing it starts all of a sudden.
Sometimes the screen changes in strange colors that don't go away until you restart the laptop.
Please repair under warranty.

Hi @Radecom,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 17.3-inch laptop PC screen is flickering, there are a few possible reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem.

  • Update graphics drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause screen flickering. Visit the HP support website or use the HP Support Assistant software to check for any available updates for your laptop's graphics drivers. Install the latest drivers and restart your laptop to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Adjust screen refresh rate: Sometimes, an incompatible screen refresh rate can cause flickering. Right-click on the desktop, select Display settings, scroll down to Display adapter properties, go to the Monitor tab, and make sure the screen refresh rate is set to the recommended value. Try adjusting the refresh rate to see if it improves the situation.
  • Check for software conflicts: Certain software applications or settings can conflict with the graphics drivers and cause screen flickering. Try booting your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the flickering persists. If the flickering stops in Safe Mode, it indicates that a third-party software or driver is causing the issue. In that case, you may need to uninstall recently installed software or update conflicting drivers.
  • Disable hardware acceleration: Sometimes, enabling hardware acceleration in certain applications can lead to screen flickering. To disable hardware acceleration, open the application causing the issue, go to its settings, and look for an option related to hardware acceleration. Disable it and check if the flickering stops.
  • Perform a power cycle: Turn off your laptop, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery (if it's removable), and then press and hold the power button for around 15 seconds. Reassemble your laptop, connect the power adapter, and power it on. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches that cause screen flickering.
  • Check for physical connections: Ensure that the video cable connecting your laptop to an external display or docking station (if applicable) is securely plugged in at both ends. If the flickering occurs only when using an external display, try using a different cable or port.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I had this problem when my Spectre was five years old. At the same time the CPU temperature went way up. I thought the over heating caused it.  A friend suggested a rogue piece of software could be the cause. I deleted software that was junk and I wasn't using and the flickering and black screen stopped. Also the the CPU temperature went down to an acceptable level. I hope you find the answer that works for you.
