My laptop screen goes black often when it's left on. I am forced to use the on/off button to shut down, then turn it back on and achieve screen visibility. I have updated all drivers,  files, programs, and Windows updates. I have run HP diagnostics, and nothing has changed.

? Help.

Hi @MonkeyMike,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does the screen go black only when idle, or does it also happen while you’re actively using the laptop?
  • How long does it usually take before the screen goes black?
  • Do you notice if the power light or fan continues running when the screen goes black?
  • Have you connected the laptop to an external monitor to see if the display issue persists there?

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Power & Sleep Settings
    • Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep and ensure the screen timeout settings aren’t set too short.
  2. Disable Fast Startup
    • Sometimes Windows Fast Startup can cause display issues.
    • Navigate to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  3. Update BIOS
    • Visit HP’s official support website and check if a BIOS update is available for your model.
  4. Perform a Hard Reset
    • Shut down the laptop, disconnect the power adapter
    • Hold the power button for 15 seconds, reconnect, and power on.
  5. Check Display Drivers
    • Even though you’ve updated drivers, try uninstalling the display driver completely and reinstalling it from HP’s support page
  6. Test with External Display
  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the external display works fine, the issue may be with the laptop’s screen or internal connections

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the message and advice.

* The screen goes black when idle for a long time, or sometimes when I open it to use.

* Not sure how long it takes, usually when it sits for hours.

* No lights or noise noticed.

* Yes, I have connected an HDMI cable to a 50" TV screen. It has never happened while connected.

* I have tried many things to resolve, such as: update drivers, update Windows, clear trash/unwanted files, reboot, reboot, and reboot.

* Most recently, I updated the BIOS, and so far, it has not occurred. (Yet) .
