i have an old hp pavillion thats 8 years old. I love the synaptics one finger scroll on the right edge of the touchpad. Im looking for a new hp laptop. Does anyone own a new hp laptop that has a one finger scroll ? I get the feeling from a few google searches that the one finger scroll is no longer available ?

Hi @molotour1
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re referring to the Synaptics one-finger scroll feature on the edge of the touchpad, a feature that many older HP laptops had, particularly with Synaptics touchpads. Unfortunately, with newer models, HP and other manufacturers have moved toward different touchpad technologies (such as Windows Precision touchpads), which have a different way of handling gestures and scrolling.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Touchpad Evolution
- Older Synaptics Touchpads: These often had additional features like edge scrolling, which you might remember as the one-finger scroll on the right edge of the touchpad.
- Windows Precision Touchpads: Most newer HP laptops (and others) now use Windows Precision drivers, which support multi-finger gestures and other touchpad features but might not include the edge scrolling functionality you’re used to. Precision touchpads focus more on pinch-to-zoom, two-finger scroll, and swiping, rather than edge-specific scrolling.
2. Checking for One-Finger Scroll on New HP Laptops
- Look for Synaptics Drivers: Some new HP laptops, particularly those that use Synaptics touchpads, may still offer some similar functionality. If you prefer that one-finger edge scroll feature, it’s worth checking the laptop’s touchpad driver settings after you purchase it. You might still be able to enable or modify scrolling behavior through the Synaptics settings in the Control Panel.
- Precision Touchpad Settings: If the laptop uses a Windows Precision touchpad, you won’t have that exact edge scroll, but you can still customize other gestures. Precision touchpads allow customization in Settings > Devices > Touchpad, where you can adjust different gesture controls.
3. Alternative Solutions
- If the one-finger edge scroll is critical for your use, you might consider searching for a Synaptics touchpad model or an older model HP laptop that still offers it.
- If you get a new laptop with a Windows Precision touchpad, you might want to try third-party software that can add extra touchpad customization. Programs like AutoHotKey or specialized touchpad drivers might help simulate the edge-scrolling feature.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel
Thank you for your detailed reply, you sound like the person i need to speak to on this matter. I am specifically looking to buy this model: HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 15-fe0020na (8J269EA) and i noticed from the HP driver software website that this driver is available for this laptop: Synaptics Precision Touchpad Filter Driver Version:19.5.35.106 Rev.A. Can you therefore confirm that if i installed this driver on this laptop i will have edge scrolling ?
I currently have version 19.5.10.75 on my current HP laptop which is 8 years old and i do have edge scrolling

Also the specs describe the touchpad as an HP imagepad not a synaptics touchpad even though it has a synaptics driver available for it, so my other question is how do i know if a laptop has a synaptics touchpad from reading the specs ?
