Hello, my PAVILION 15 laptop boots up without any problems, but when I move the mouse cursor, the screen flickers, a black screen appears, and then the screen flickers again. I've updated Windows and the BIOS, but the problem persists. I've seen videos online suggesting it might be the HALL sensor and that it needs to be removed.

Hi @adsızx,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It’s understandably alarming when your screen flickers and blacks out as you move the mouse, especially after updating the BIOS and Windows. While some suspect the HALL sensor, HP doesn’t recommend altering internal components. Let’s troubleshoot using supported steps to resolve the flickering reliably.

1. Check Internal Display Connections

Loose cables or connectors can cause flickering. This can happen if the laptop has been moved or bumped:

  • Have a technician check the internal display cable connections between the motherboard and the screen. This is the safest way to rule out physical hardware issues.

2. Update Display Driver

Outdated graphics drivers are a common cause of visual glitches:

  • Press Start + X, open Device Manager → expand Display adapters → right-click your GPU → select Update driver → choose Search automatically.
  • Restart your laptop afterwards.

3. Adjust Display Settings

Refresh rate and resolution mismatches can produce flicker during movement:

  • Right-click on the desktop → Display settingsAdvanced display settingsDisplay adapter propertiesMonitor tab → select a refresh rate like 60 Hz or 75 Hz.

4. Run Graphics Hardware Diagnostics

HP Support Assistant has built-in tools to check for hardware issues:

  • Open HP Support Assistant → go to Troubleshooting and fixes → select Graphics and run the recommended diagnostics.

5. Test with External Monitor

Connecting your laptop to an external display helps isolate the cause:

If the external display works fine without flickering, the laptop’s screen or its internal wiring may be the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
