Just so you know, this is not a BIOS or drive issue.  So if anyone tells you to update those, they are providing you bad information.

This is purely a hardware issue -- and is either the screen (most likely) or the video chip (less likely).

To check this out, connect an external monitor. My guess is that the line will NOT show up in the monitor -- confirming this is a failing screen issue.

Screens can be replaced but that is difficult to do and very expensive -- often costing more than simply replacing the laptop in older models.
