HP Elite
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Touch screen sporadic failures and pointer migrates spontaneously and opens menus and dialogue boxes. Pointer flickers at the same time and occasionally refuses to respond to trackpoint/mouse.

So far I have updated drivers and disabled and re-enabled, uninstalled and reinstalled mouse, touchscreen. I also attempter the "reset" windows from the recovery menu and got a message to the effect that the reset failed due to an error - didn't say what the error was.

The problems described above seriously interfere with use of the computer - Please help.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

You can also refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03488148

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Hello KrazyToad,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.

I have attempted to execute all the suggestions, but for some I was unable to do so - here's a summary the ones that I could not do.

Step 5 I only get 3 choices and none of them lead to components test

Step 9/10  I started this one and after a good bit of time the message appeared "There was a problem reseting your PC. No changes were made.

The problem with the touchscreen and cursor has not been corrected.

What else can be done?

Regards,

Richard M.

Thanks for keeping me posted

I see that the Reset did not work. Try a System Recovery instead and check if that works

Hello Krazy Toad,

Thanks for all your help so far,

As I stated in my last e-mail, I have done all the steps in your first e-mail. These actions did not, at first, appear to have helped. After a few days the frequency of "events" did become less. Occasionally, the touch screen spontaneously stops working (no  pattern that I can notice), and later on resumes working on its own, and I have had the pointer "doing it's own thing" from time to time - it goes really WILD and starts opening menus and programmes, and very quickly.

Your suggestion to do a system recovery from the site you indicated seems like a rather severe choice. It is tax season and I have A LOT of numbers in the system and forms "in progress". I have put off the "severe" option as I do not want to lose any info.

I would like to ask your advice on 2 issues. Can we figure out why the "reset" choice from the Windows menu did not work so I can try it again.

Secondly, what other, less drastic options, can I try?

On another issue, since I have a chance to pick your  brain, how can I run a choice of 2 different systems on the same computer, and be able to chose, perhaps in a start up menu, which one the computer opens. Specifically, I would like to run Windows 8 and Windows 10, and if possible, Windows 3.1. If I need to partition the hard drive, would you be kind enough to give me the steps expressed in a way that in understandable by someone (me) who knows little about the technical side of computers and programming.  I'd like very much to learn more, but the P & R courses that I signed up for were all cancelled due to cocco. They didn't sound all that great. Would you mind to direct me to some learning opportunities?

Lastly, I have a "very strange" thing happen. The back ground screen for the desk-top has a blue background, some "artistic" white lines swirls and the word "Insignia". How did I get this on an HP Elite (nothing to do with Insignia and a very important question to answer as I do not want strange things happening on their own - in today's times, the computer has to be used for  banking and investments, etc. - and how can I get rid of it?

Regards,

Richard

Hello Krazy Toad,

While I wait for your answer to my latest comments (April 28th), a new issue has come to my attention - should I pay heed to this/take any action.

When I visit the HP Assistant, it says that I need to update the Flash Player - when I visit the Flash player, it says that the company is no longer maintaining flash player, and that it should be uninstalled - so where do I go on this now???

I have tried to attach the dialogue box with the exact wording - but that doesn't work - if you send me a "functioning" e-mail address for your self, I will attach it and send it there.

Another new problem: I have an Hp photosmart C5500 all-in-pone printer with which I have been quite pleased. My daughter has one too - same comment. However, they have both stopped working with the comment "cartridge jam". I have searched up all the suggestions as to how to fix such a problem to no avail. I will need your help with this as well.

When it first happened, I was anxious to get a WiFi wireless printer, so bought another HP (3830) but the quality of printing, esp photos, is a disappointment, and none of my daughters can figure out how to scan something to a USB - it was easy on the C5500. I also takes different ink cartridges, and print very few pages in comparison - noticibly and profoundly, fewer!!

Furthermore, I have been loyal to HP (computers, laptops, tablets, printers, etc, as you know) and would like to emphasize that it is QUITE odd, that the same 2 printers should fail for the same reason. In the circumstances, and following on from my 3830 experience, I do not think it is unfair to ask that HP take responsibility for their goods, and supply a suitable solution. I should think to supply a fully working C5500 would be in order, particularly as I have $$ invested in print cartridges, which cannot be used with other printers.

Regards,

Richard

P.S.: Another frustration I would really appreciate help with - how do I bcc my notes to you on this forum - can't figure it out, but I prefer to use that method for following up on issues which have been put to the table.
