Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop touchpad has stopped working all of a sudden. While researching on the internet i got to know to run BIOS but when i tried doing that it stops the Bitlocker. So i did not run the BIOS. Few days earlier its cooling fan was not working so i opened up my laptop and fix the issue but after few days touchpad stopped working all of a sudden. what to do now? i have run all the troubleshooting from settings to window update but still no luck, does anybody have any clue what to do in this situation?

Hi @LAPTOP-ENFEJQAM,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused and don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Could you let me know the exact HP laptop model you’re using?
  • When the touchpad stopped working, did it disappear from Device Manager under “Mice and other pointing devices”?
  • Do you notice if an external mouse works fine, or is there any lag with that too?
  • Did the touchpad stop working immediately after the fan repair, or was there a gap of a few days?

Troubleshooting steps to try

  1. Check Touchpad Enable/Disable Shortcut
    • Some HP laptops have a function key (often F5, F6, or a small square on the touchpad itself) that toggles the touchpad on/off. Please confirm it isn’t accidentally disabled.
  2. Device Manager Reset
    • Open Device Manager → expand Mice and other pointing devices.
    • If you see “Synaptics/ELAN Touchpad,” right-click → Uninstall device.
    • Restart your laptop Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
  3. HP Support Assistant
    • Run HP Support Assistant to check for driver updates specific to your model. Sometimes Windows Update misses manufacturer-specific drivers.
  4. BIOS Settings (without update)
    • You don’t need to update BIOS yet just check if the touchpad is enabled in BIOS settings. Restart your laptop, press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS, and look under Advanced → Internal Pointing Device. Make sure it’s set to Enabled.
    • This won’t trigger BitLocker unless you change BIOS firmware, so it’s safe to check.

I hope this helps.
