Touchpad not working

Hi @stephen420

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how frustrating it can be when the touchpad stops responding. Let’s go through a set of focused steps to help resolve the issue on your HP laptop.

1. Check if the Touchpad Was Disabled by Shortcut

Sometimes, the touchpad can be accidentally turned off using a keyboard shortcut.

Look for a Function key (F1–F12) with a touchpad icon (often F5, F6, or F7 on HP laptops).

Press Fn + [that key] to toggle the touchpad back on.

If unsure, try pressing Fn + F6, Fn + F9, or Fn + F11 to test.

2. Enable Touchpad via Windows Settings

The touchpad may be disabled at the software level.

Press Windows + I to open Settings.

Go to Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad.

Make sure Touchpad is turned On.

Scroll down to ensure gesture settings are configured properly.

3. Check Device Manager

The touchpad driver may be disabled or not functioning correctly.

Press Windows + X, then select Device Manager.

Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.

Look for a touchpad device. If you see it:

Right-click and choose Enable, if available.

If already enabled, select Update driverSearch automatically.

4. Reinstall the Touchpad Driver

If enabling doesn't help, reinstalling the driver may resolve hidden corruption.

In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad entry.

Select Uninstall device.

Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

5. Update Drivers and BIOS

Outdated drivers or system firmware can cause touchpad malfunctions.

You can check for updates here:

HP Support – Software and Driver Downloads

Enter your laptop's serial number or model to find the correct touchpad, chipset, and BIOS updates.

6. Check Touchpad Settings in BIOS

If the touchpad is disabled in BIOS, it won't work at all in Windows.

Turn off the laptop.

Power on and immediately start pressing Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.

Look under Advanced or Internal Device Configuration.

Ensure the Touchpad or Pointing Device is Enabled.

Save and exit.

7. External Mouse Interference

If you've been using an external mouse, your system might have disabled the touchpad when one was connected.

Go to Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Touchpad.

Uncheck “Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected” (or enable it, depending on preference).

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please let me know your HP laptop model number, and I’ll help locate the exact driver or guide for your device.

If needed, I can also guide you through using the HP Hardware Diagnostics Tool to test for hardware faults.
