updating UHD Graphics Driver crashes laptop

So I've had some issues with my spectre x360 which required a complete reinstall of windows.  During its updating, if I allow it to update the driver for Intel UHD Graphics 620, the screen goes black, i have to restart three times and roll it back to a restore point.  This wouldn't be a huge deal except that without the updated driver, I can't adjust the screen brightness or put it in night mode.  Screen is 100% bright all the time, draining the battery.  Also, as a frequent migraine sufferer and doing a lot of nighttime computer work, these are important features to me.  After searching high and low, doing all the troubleshoots, tweaks, restores, registry fixes etc. and a $160 trip to the local computer hospital, the closest I've come to a fix is to disable the UHD graphics card (then i cant adjust brightness but at least the screen works) or possibly have a customized driver installed from HP.  Any thoughts? It's not a cheap laptop and I would like it to work as intended to save my eyeballs.
