Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for the details — you're not alone on this. After a Windows 11 upgrade, it’s common for older HP laptops like the 17-bs153cl to run into webcam issues, especially when the system mistakenly recognizes the internal webcam as a "USB BOOT" device.
That label means the camera is not being recognized properly by Windows as a webcam — it’s either misclassified or missing firmware/driver support.
Step 1: Check Device Manager Classification
Press Win + X → choose Device Manager.
Look under these sections:
Imaging devices
Cameras
Universal Serial Bus devices
Other devices
If you see “USB BOOT” or an unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark, that’s your webcam being misrecognized.
Step 2: Remove the Wrong Driver
Right-click the USB BOOT or webcam device.
Choose Uninstall device.
Check the box that says “Delete the driver software for this device” (if available).
Reboot your laptop.
Windows might attempt to reinstall a generic driver on reboot — which may or may not fix it. Continue with next steps either way.
Step 3: Install the Windows 10 Driver Manually
Since HP hasn’t always updated drivers for older webcams to be Windows 11-compatible, you’ll need to install the last working Windows 10 camera driver manually:
👉 Download the HP Camera Driver:
Go to the official driver page for your model:
HP 17-bs153cl Drivers
Look for Realtek IR Camera Driver or HP TrueVision HD Camera under Driver – Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices.
Download and install the Windows 10 version, even on Windows 11.
Reboot after installation.
Step 4: Disable Windows Automatic Driver Replacement (optional but recommended)
To stop Windows 11 from overwriting your working Windows 10 driver:
Press Win + R → type sysdm.cpl → Enter.
Go to Hardware > Device Installation Settings.
Select No (your device might not work as expected).
Save.
Step 5: Check Camera App
After the driver is installed:
Open the Camera app (type Camera in Start).
If it works — done.
If not, check Privacy Settings:
Go to:
Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
Make sure apps are allowed to access the camera.
Want a direct driver link for your webcam model? Let me know what shows under Device Manager → Hardware IDs for the USB BOOT device. That’ll help pinpoint the exact webcam chip.
