I have an HP Envy laptop model 17-cr1005cl less than 2 years old.  I keep the lid of the laptop closed and view with an external monitor.  Moving the mouse would wake up the monitor... until recently.  The control panel settings for closing the lid are set to "do nothing".  There was a bios update and that corrected the problem for a few days and now I am back to opening the laptop lid to wake up the external monitor.  Any one have a fix for this?

Hi @ManassasMike,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have trouble with the Pc, It sounds like your HP Envy 17-cr1005cl is having issues waking the external monitor while the lid is closed, even though your power settings are correctly set. Since a BIOS update temporarily fixed it, this could be caused by a Windows update, a driver issue, or a power management setting reverting.

Try These Fixes:

1. Check Power & Sleep Settings

Since your lid close action is already set to "Do Nothing," double-check other power settings:

  1. Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose when to turn off the display.
  2. Set Turn off display to a longer duration (or Never for testing).
  3. Click Change advanced power settings → Expand USB settings and PCI Express → Set both to Disabled.

2. Update Display & USB Drivers

Outdated graphics or USB drivers could be preventing the monitor from waking up:

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters → Right-click your GPU (Intel or NVIDIA) → Update driver.
  3. Do the same under Monitors and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Restart your laptop and test if the issue is fixed.

3. Manually Set External Display as Primary

If Windows is confused about which monitor to wake up:

  1. Right-click Desktop → Display settings.
  2. Scroll down to Multiple displays → Select Only show on [External Monitor].
  3. Click Apply and restart.

4. Reset BIOS Settings (Again)

Since a BIOS update briefly fixed the issue, a setting may have changed:

  1. Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  2. Look for Power Management settings related to sleep and USB wake-up.
  3. Reset BIOS to Default Settings (there should be an option).
  4. Save and Exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
