Hi @a2331

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand that your HP EliteBook 840 G8 is displaying a whitish or washed-out image, and I appreciate the troubleshooting you've already completed, including updating the display driver, checking color calibration settings, and turning off HDR.

Since those steps did not improve the display quality, let's continue with some additional diagnostics that can help isolate whether the behavior is related to software, graphics settings, or the display panel itself.

Check the Display in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Power it on and repeatedly tap the F2 key.
  • Select Component Tests.
  • Choose Display and run the available display tests.
  • Observe whether the test patterns appear washed out or if colors look normal.

If the display appears washed out during the hardware diagnostics test, it may indicate a display panel or display hardware-related concern.

Test the Display in BIOS

  • Restart the notebook.
  • Repeatedly press the Esc key, then select F10 for BIOS Setup.
  • Check whether the BIOS screens also appear whitish or faded.

Results:

  • If the BIOS screen appears normal, Windows or graphics settings are more likely involved.
  • If the BIOS screen also appears washed out, the issue may be hardware-related.
  1. Reset Intel Graphics Settings

Your HP EliteBook 840 G8 typically uses Intel graphics.

  • Right-click on the desktop and open Intel Graphics Command Center.
  • Select Display.
  • Look for options such as:
    • Color
    • Contrast
    • Brightness Enhancement
    • Display Color Enhancement
  • Choose Restore Defaults or Reset to Default Settings.

Disable Adaptive Brightness and Power Saving Display Features

  • Open Control Panel.
  • Select Power Options.
  • Choose Change plan settings.
  • Select Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Display.
  • If available, disable adaptive brightness settings.
  • Save the changes and restart the notebook.

Check for HP BIOS Updates

A BIOS update can help address display communication and hardware optimization.

  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Select Updates.
  • Install any available BIOS, chipset, or graphics-related updates.
  • Restart the notebook after the updates complete.
  1. Test with an External Monitor
  • Connect the notebook to an external monitor or TV.
  • Compare the image quality.

Results:

  • If the external display appears normal while the notebook screen looks washed out, the issue is likely isolated to the notebook display assembly.

If both displays appear washed out, the graphics subsystem or display configuration may be contributing to the behavior.

Perform a Graphics Driver Refresh

Instead of only updating the driver, try a clean refresh:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click the Intel graphics adapter and select Uninstall device.
  • Enable the option to remove the driver software if available.
  • Restart the notebook.
  • Allow Windows to reinstall the graphics driver automatically.
  • Then install the latest graphics driver available through HP Support Assistant.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
