Hello

Recently upgraded to windows 10 1709 to find that the auto rotate no longer works.

When i manually rotate the laptop, windows popup states 'change to tablet mode' so the HW/SW is somewhat acknowledged by windows but does not trigger the correct effect.

Auto rotate lock tile does not appear in the notification draw and no auto rotate option is visable in settings (under the screen orientation option) as was present in 1703.

Ive tried reinstalling both Intel Virtual Button Driver and  Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver with no change.

Registry entry for autorotate shows as on/active. Sensor services exist and appear to be active.

If i downgrade back to 1703, via recovery, the auto rotate service returns.

Does anyone have experience with fixing this without downgrading?

Will HP/Intel release updated driver?

Cheers

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the windows 10 1709 auto screen rotation stopped,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you attempt to update the drivers for your video card & BIOS?

(Click here to find and install it, if you didn't do it after upgrading to 1709)

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

  • Use Win + R key combination -> type 'regedit' and enter
  • Registry editor will open up.
  • Goto path -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation
  • Check the value of Enable file if it is 0 rotation will be OFF, if 1 rotation will be ON.
  • Restart and Auto rotation will work.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hello Riddle_Decipher

Yes, i updated the BIOS to the latest version on the HP site. Ive installed graphics drivers via windows update and HP site as i have been troubleshooting since i posted.

If i do a clean instal of 1703 (not from recovery) and install virtual button and sensor drivers rotation works. Once ive installed the other components drivers either via HP site or windows update rotation stops and rotation lock button disappears.

Ive delved into the registry and copied all mention of rotation. i can now get the rotation button back but rotation does not happen. Still windows senses a chnage in rotation but does not trigger the correct effect (rotation), asks if you want to chnage to tabletmode and the rotation lock button activates (from grey to white).

I have a slight different experience with the 'autorotation' registry fix. i have enable as 1 but an aditional entry SensorPresent is 1 when working but 0 when not working:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation

Enable = 1

LastOrientation = 0

SensorPresent = 0 (This should be 1 but changes to 0 after updates or additional drivers)

SlateEnable = 1

There is also an issue with sensor services.

SERVICES:

Sensor Data Service - wont be running, seems to be normal.

Sensor Monitoring Service = will be running when rotation works *

Sensor Service = Running

* when other drivers are installed this service shows as not running. When manually started, the service starts but then automatically stops with windows promt.

I'm going to continue to play tonight.

My plan is install fresh 1703, install all HP provided drivers but leave virtual button and sensor driver untill the end.

As Windows is still pushing 1709, im assuming other people may run into the same issues.

Would be good to hear if peole have had the 1709 installed without issues?

Cheers

@LVD1

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Please take your time in upgrading back to Windows 10 1709 and get back to me with the results,

I'll be awaiting your response and would be glad to help.

Although, if the issue persists, I recommend you install all available updates on both windows & HP support assistant,

Also, ensure the auto-rotation is turned on:

  1. Fold the computer into tablet mode.

  2. Swipe in from the right side to open the Action Center.

  3. Tap Rotation lock to enable this feature.

Keep me posted,

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accepted Solution.

And click on the Purple Thumbs up icon at the bottom of my comment.

Hello Riddle_Decipher

Latest steps have been:

Fresh install of Windows 10 1703 from ISO not recovery.

installed all latest updates from HP site leaving virtual button and sensor drivers as the last installs.

- everything works -

Turn on wifi, allow windows update for 1703.

- everything works -

Windows update will then start downloading 1709 and install (you can not stop this in home edition). On reboot, rotation no longer works!

  1. does not auto rotate

  2. rotation lock button is not present in quick settings

  3. on rotaion of device it asks if you want to activate tablet mode.

Due to hunting around in registry in 1703, i can get the quick settings 'rotation lock' visable in quick settings but it does not affect screen rotation.

I mimiced all registry settings that will take in 1703 in 1709 but still no auto rotation.

Do you have a resolution for this?

If you need more information, let me know.

Hi! @LVD1, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have auto rotate issues with your laptop.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

As you mentioned you have auto rotate issues with your laptop.

You can try updating Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver and BIOS on your PC and check if that helps.

Link to update the BIOS.

Update the Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver from this link.

Also, You can update the drivers using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

Also, try changing few settings:

Open Settings App and go to System > Display.
Find Orientation and choose Portrait from the menu.
Your device should automatically switch to portrait mode.

Go to Control Panel> Display>Change Display Settings and then make sure that the "Allow the screen to auto-rotate" is selected

Refer this article to know more information about Switching Between Tablet Mode and Desktop Mode.

Also, Try the steps recommended below.

Press Windows + r

Write regedit in the search box.

Search HKLM / software / policies / microsoft / windows / locationsAndSensors /

Verify that all are zero (0); If they are not, change them to zero (0)

If the issue persists try the steps recommended below.

1. Press Windows key + R, then type in devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
2. On the Device Manager window, expand the Sensors section.
3. Right-click on HID Sensor Collection V2, then select Properties and check if it's enabled.
