Hi @cjmdpi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Spectre x360 touchpad is protruding from the keyboard base and working intermittently. Let’s go through steps to figure out the cause.

Check for Battery Swelling

Remove the back cover (if comfortable) and inspect the battery.

Look for swelling or expansion, which can push up the keyboard and touchpad.

Swollen batteries are a safety risk and need replacement immediately.

Inspect Touchpad Alignment

If the battery looks normal, check if the touchpad is loose or the mounting clips are broken.

Sometimes a misaligned touchpad can be reseated without replacing the whole keyboard base.

Test Touchpad Functionality

Connect an external mouse temporarily to continue using the laptop.

If the touchpad works intermittently despite appearing aligned, it may indicate internal damage to the touchpad mechanism.

Check for Pressure Points

Gently press around the touchpad area and see if it pops back into place.

If it immediately misaligns again, it could indicate structural damage in the chassis or keyboard base.

Consider Hardware Replacement

If battery is swollen, replace the battery first; it may solve the misalignment.

If the battery is fine and the touchpad/keyboard base is warped, keyboard base replacement may be required.

Avoid Using If Battery is Swollen

Swollen batteries can damage internal components and are a fire hazard.

Stop using the laptop until inspected/replaced.

I hope this helps.
